Fault line

In January to September 2023, Canada exported about 23.6 Mm³ of softwood lumber, nearly 90 % of it to the United States, ahead of Russia (≈ 15 Mm³) and Sweden (≈ 14 Mm³ for the year). Construction lumber is a massive input for residential building. The lock is a cross-dependence: the US single-family housing market relies heavily on Canadian supply, while Canada ships most of its output to a single customer. Recurrent US antidumping duties on softwood lumber show the political fragility of this trade corridor.
