Hydrazine and its derivatives propel almost all satellite upper stages and station-keeping. Its toxicity makes it a target of European REACH regulation, from which the space industry has been negotiating an exemption for more than a decade. The European chain, concentrated around ArianeGroup's centre at Lampoldshausen, is developing "green" propellants without yet having a qualified substitute at large scale.
