Backed by cheap Gulf of Mexico shale gas, Donaldsonville became the safety valve of the global nitrogen market when Europe closed its plants in 2022. The site nonetheless concentrates a critical share of exportable supply, in a zone exposed to Gulf hurricanes. The Blue Point complex ($4bn, decided in 2025) will accentuate this Louisiana polarisation.
