Coal India is the world's largest coal company: about 785 million tonnes in 2024, most of the billion tonnes mined by the country, the world's second producer behind China. Coal still provides nearly three-quarters of India's electricity; any strain on this production, a state monopoly, feeds directly through to the grid of a country of 1.4 billion people. A massive domestic dependence, at odds with the proclaimed transition.
