Laying a submarine power cable requires specialised ships, of which only about sixty exist, often ageing; the fleet is said to be short by 40 to 55 units by 2028. Prysmian's Leonardo da Vinci and the Nexans Aurora are among the rare units capable of very high voltage, each ship is a single point of failure on a continental scale.
