Carbon black reinforces tyres and imparts conductivity to battery electrodes and engineering plastics. It is born from the partial combustion of heavy refining oils, hostage therefore both to the price of oil and to emission standards that threaten the oldest furnaces. China integrates its units with neighbouring tyre plants; Asia-Pacific concentrates nearly two-thirds of world production.
