PVDF is the binder that holds lithium-ion battery electrodes together and the membrane of electrolysers, a fluoropolymer derived from fluorspar and fluorine chemistry. Five producers, Arkema (Kynar), Kureha, Solvay, Daikin, Dongyue, account for nearly two-thirds of the market, but China consumes 61% of it and its makers erode the prices of battery grades. The mounting restrictions on PFAS weigh on the entire fluorinated chain.
