Fluorspar & hydrofluoric acid, China
All of fluorine chemistry starts from a single ore, fluorspar (CaF2), from which hydrofluoric acid is drawn. With no adequate substitute for producing HF, it feeds fluoropolymers (battery-grade PVDF), semiconductor etch gases, refrigerants and uranium enrichment. China mines nearly two-thirds of it and has tightened supply through repeated safety inspections; the United States imports all of its own, mostly from Mexico.
In 2025 China represents ≈58% of world fluorspar mine production (6.0 Mt of 10.3 Mt) but its mines are constrained and its imports jumped 48%; reopenings and new projects in eight countries (Mongolia, Mexico, Australia, Canada…) are starting to diversify supply — no quantified projection.USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, 2026 ↗
