Iran ~16% of world gas reserves (2nd, 2023); South Pars ~70% of Iran's gas output

South Pars, the Iranian share of the field shared with Qatar (North Dome), is the largest natural gas reservoir on Earth and supplies about 70% of Iran's gas production. Iran holds 16% of the world's proved gas reserves, second only to Russia at end-2023 (EIA, 2024). Concentrating output on this single field, whose older phases are declining for lack of investment under sanctions, strains both Iran's domestic gas supply and its export commitments. It is the Iranian extension of the same field as the North Field, Qatar node.
