Three Gorges Dam

The Three Gorges Dam, on the Yangtze in Hubei, is the world's largest power station with 22,500 MW installed and about 103.6 TWh generated in 2024. It embodies China's standing as the world's top hydropower producer, far ahead of Brazil and Canada. Its output depends heavily on monsoon rainfall, which varies sharply year to year, and the structure concentrates flood control and part of a vast basin's electricity in a single point. A prolonged drought or a major incident would directly affect the grid of central and eastern China.
