Indicative delayed market price: a tension gauge, distinct from the physical flow. A rise signals the input tightening.
Fault line
The world's largest wheat importer, Egypt drew 82% of its purchases from Russia and Ukraine over 2017-2021, to feed a subsidised bread programme on which more than 70 million people depend. The 2022 war forced diversification while paradoxically increasing the Russian share. The food security of the most populous Arab country remains indexed to the Black Sea and the dollar rate.
